David Bloch was a Deaf Jewish artist born in Germany. Orphaned at the age of one, he grew up during a time of rising persecution. In 1938, he was arrested and sent to the Dachau concentration camp. By a miracle, an American cousin intervened and secured his release.
Bloch fled to Shanghai, China, where he lived for nine years, creating art that reflected both his resilience and the human spirit’s endurance. After World War II, he immigrated to the United States and settled in Mount Vernon, New York.
This particular artwork depicts inmates gathered in the vast yard of Dachau. The triangles of light symbolize the presence of God — a reminder that divine light can still exist even in the darkest places.
